Things I think are scathingly brilliant: Bob Grawi

Chess in the round Bob Grawi

Chess in the round by Bob Grawi

Living as I do with a games nut who is particularly partial to chess, this is a must have!   A fantastic looking board also appeals to the aesthetically inclined.   I found this gem whilst browsing for handmade musical instruments as the very talented inventor of this game also makes all manner of other things.  Included amongst his creations is this wonder:

Gravikord by Bob Grawi

This is the ‘Gravikord’ , an electric double harp developed from the West African kora; patented & trademarked by Bob Grawi.  Innovative & a beautiful design.   Take a look at these & some of Bob’s other amazing work at his online store NewMuse

Things I think are scathingly brilliant: I’m a Sally Pants

Imasallypants candlestickImasallypants candlestick1

These clever, quirky & eminently practical candlesticks are dreamt up & then cold welded into being by an Illinois PhD student in her spare time (apparently sleep is optional; who has spare time while undertaking a PhD in anything?) when she’s not studying history.   Such attractive pieces with a sense of humor to match their robust nature; just love it!   Even her store I’m A Sally Pants has a sense of fun, with the slogan ‘where form mocks function’!

Things I think are scathingly brilliant: Clay Lab Detroit

ClayLabDetroitTeapot

How good would a cup of tea taste when poured from a teapot as magnificent as this?  Incredibly this amazing work of art is also a fully functional, dishwasher safe, microwave safe & food safe teapot.  The very cool atomic design is fully hand built; no mass production moulded run of same sameness here!

For more work by the very talented Detroit artist Carrie Armstrong Reid, who is studying at the  College for Creative Studies in Detroit, have a look at her website ClayLab.

Things I think are scathingly brilliant: Joe Papendick

Easily the most spectacular birdfeeders I’ve ever seen; the work of St Louis artist Joe Papendick is out of this world!   Carefully designed as a practical, secure place to allow birds to gather & feed ; they’re also beautiful sculptural pieces in their own right.  They stand  a fabulous 6 feet tall & are constructed with steel ; including a clever stainless steel screen tray to hold the food whilst allowing water drainage ; these beauties will probably outlast you!

View more of Joe’s amazing pieces at his store or see what he’s working on at his blog.

Things I think are scathingly brilliant: Munglerump Studio

Practical, eco-friendly, budget friendly & gorgeous; what more could you ask for?   These are just two from the range of tote bag designs by Geelong artist Zoe, available from munglerumpstudio.  They’re so fabulous I’ve already bought one & I  want them all!
